Profiling New Generation Electronic Fare Ticketing
System
Singapore has unique practical experiences in the development and
management of the operation of payment systems for public transport
and Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) systems. This includes contactless
smartcard for public bus and rail and a smartcard system for road
pricing. Land Transport Authority (LTA) launched its new generation
e-payment system for public transit, Symphony for e-Payment (SeP)
in January 2009. The launch included the mass replacement of the
old smartcards with the new generation smartcards. Developed in-house
by LTA, SeP is built on the Singapore Standard for Contactless ePurse
Application (CEPAS2) which allows any smart card that complies with
the standard to be used with the system and in a wide variety of
payment applications. It is based on an 'open platform' that allows
multiple card issuers who comply with the standard to use the system.
This has opened up the transit market for more card issuers and
provided more choices for commuters.
